Blog 9

            The three articles that we discuss in class were the two David Brooks articles and Barbra Graham’s article. I gained understanding concrete and abstract better, because I did not really a good understanding of those words. So after breaking down the three different articles.

            The most interesting connection that I had was when we talked about in David Brooks article, “The Epidemic of Worry” we talked about how different class of anxiety. For an example we talked about how a rich countries has more anxiety than poorer countries, because richer countries want more, they think that they need something and they do not want to miss out on there freedom. I did not realized that until we talked about it in class, because I did not think about how many times we think that we need something and we do not get it. We get upset if we do not get it or we just keep thinking about it. Another interesting connection that we discussed in class was in the other David Brooks article, “It’s Not About You.” When talked about how most people who graduate do not get married, they go job to job to find a better job each time to support themselves and they do not buy a house straight out of college. This connected to me because, not a lot of people do not get good jobs, buy a house and do not get married. For example when my cousins got out of college they went job to job, they did not get married and they did not buy a house.

            What was interesting to me was they way we broke down each article into pieces. By doing that it helped me better to understand each of the three articles. At first I really did not understand the David brooks article until we broke each one down. At first I thought it was going to be easy to compare the two different Brooks articles, and it was hard. But we were not able to compare the two different David Brooks articles as a class.

            Discussing with my classmates about the articles helped understand the articles. When we had trouble connecting the three articles we would help each other. Another reason is when we were in groups we would worked together we would get to here each other opinions on the articles, and we would help each other on the articles. Talking with my peers did help me understand concert and abstract better.

The Epidemic of Worry

            After reading “The Epidemic of Worry” by Brooks what stood out to me the most was when the author said, that worrying shrinks your mind so you will not enjoy what is going around you right now. That stood out to me in light of the fact when people worry that is the only thing that they think about, and what is mostly going through their head at the time. Another reason this stood out to me because this makes me understand about worrying shrinks your happiness. Sometimes when I am with my friends, and they worry about school that is the only thing that they talk about. They do not want to change the subject, and it brings down the vibe.

            Another quote that brooks says in the article that stood out to me was that “Anxiety changes people.” This stood out to me because one of my best friends has an anxiety disorder. By that I mean he cannot be way from his house for a long period of time. For along time he would never want to be home and now he feels like he has to. For an example my friends and I went to one of my friend’s bay house in Galveston for a couple of days. Towards the end of the trip my friends, and I knew that he was trying to go back home because he kept asking us to go back to Houston. He did this on multiple trips that we all went on. So that was the beginning of his anxiety disorder. About a month ago he had to get a service dog because the dog would cheer him up. At first when I met him he was not like that, but when he got anxiety he changed.

            The anxiety rate in an educated country just like America is 18.2 percent to get anxiety. In a less educated country just like Nigeria is 3.3 percent to get anxiety. In America the rate is higher, in light of the fact people have to make more choice, in an every day life than Nigeria. By being a citizen in a first world country I have not experience any of the anxiety that Brooks had listed; in light of the fact that I am usually around people that like. I also am usually in a good mood and I cannot stay mad for a while.

The things that I get out of doing the blogs

            This will be our seventh blog that we have done this semester. I have really enjoyed writing these blogs. Each time we write a blog it is a different topic. But I like to write about what we learn, or what we read over in class; in light of the fact that it helps me review the material what we learn or read in class. Writing blogs makes me go in too deeper thinking, in light of the fact that I go into detail when I am writing a blog. Just to get my point across, so other people can read it and understand where I stand on a certain topic.

            One of the things I enjoy the most about writing blogs is that; I can read other people’s blogs, in light of the fact that I like to see what they have to say. Another thing I like about reading other people’s blogs are that I can see if we agree, or disagree on the same topic. I can see why they agree or disagree with me. I like to see other people’s opinion on a topic. I can tell them if I agree or disagree with them.

            I also enjoy receiving other people’s comments on my blogs, in light of the fact that I like to see what my peers have to say when they read it. I love to see when people agree or disagree with me, in light of the fact that every one has different opinions about different topics. So we can see what is their input on what I have I said about a certain topic that I wrote about.

I really enjoy when we have our peers look over our rough draft for the blogs. My classmates make me a better writer, in light of the fact that they critique my writing. When they critique my writing they tell me what I can do better, or when I did something wrong they fix it and they tell me what I did wrong. So when I rewrite my blog I can fix what I did wrong or make it better. Each time I try to write a different blog I try to do better, and do something a little bit different each time. So I can become a better writer each time. By the time that we are all done with these blogs for the semester we will all become better writers.

Dirty Jobs

            I have watched Dirty Jobs before, and I would think to my self. Why would you want to do that type of stuff for a living? I only ask that question because my parents always taught me to go to college. They never suggested to me to do one of those jobs in Dirty Jobs. I think that they never suggested those jobs to me, in light of the fact that they think I would not want to do those types of jobs. I feel that parents do not want their children to do those hard labor jobs.

            What stood out to me during Mike Rowe’s interview was when he talked about scholarships in light of the fact that, they are a bunch of different things. One thing is they do not have is a scholarship for how people worked hard in school. There are a lot of students that work hard in school. The other thing that stood out to me was when he said, “Follow your passion.” This stood out to me, in light of the fact that if you do not follow your passion. You will not be or as happy as you will if you would have followed your passion. I have met a lot of people in my life, and they told me to follow your passion. When I was deciding on what to major in college, and I really did not know what I wanted to do in life. So people told me to follow my passion.

            Mike Rowe makes valid points during his interview, in light of the fact that he speaks for the people how does hard labor jobs that not a lot of people know about.  He also talks about the unemployment rate. He talked about we need more jobs to help the unemployment rate. The big thing he talked about that we are in debt. But we need more jobs to help the economy, so it would reduce our debt.

            This video does not want me to reconsider what I am doing at Blinn, because I always had the mind set to go to college and get a job that I would like to do. I know that if it were hard labor I would not want to do those types of jobs. For business maganemet I have to go to college to do that, and I am falling my passion.

Social Media

            Social media has its pros and cons. I believe that social media is not that bad for people in light of the fact that, it lets people see what other people are doing in their daily lives. A lot of people along the lines of social media in light of the fact that; when people have nothing to do they are usually on social media. I know in the event that I am bored or have nothing to do. I am usually on social media.

            With social media you can talk to people all over the country and interact with them. People can build a better friendship with there friends. In the event that someone is shy to talk to other people in person. They can just talk to other people on social media. With social media it can also keep you up with interesting things that is happening all over the world. It can keep people up on the news, sports; can show people how in order to cook different foods and a whole lot more. Social media makes time go by fast in light of the fact that, you are entertain by what you are looking at on social media.

            The few bad things with social media are that younger people are on social media for a long period time. In todays society younger people cannot be with out there phones for a long period of time. With social media it even makes it harder for younger people in order to stay off their phone. When students are studying they get distracted my being on social media because, that’s what happens to me a lot. People would procrastinate by being on social media. When I am studying or doing homework. So it would take me longer to study or do homework in light of the fact, I would be on social media. But when people argue with each other on social media. They usually end up fighting each other, and social media can destroy friendships really fast if things get out of hand.

Social media is not just for entertainment. They are some other social media that can help people get jobs. People post there resume, and jobs that are looking for people to hire they look at their resume. They are a lot of different types of social media that can help people in a good way.
